Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma passes away
Thiruvananthapuram: Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma (91), the last ruling monarch of the Kingdom of Travancore passed away today early morning at 2.20am. 

He was admitted in the ICU at SUT hospital due to illness on 6 December 2013. Though his health conditions had got better in the middle,  he bid adieu to the world today early morning. 

The cremation of the body will be conducted after 3.00 pm at the Kavadiyar Palace grounds. 

He is survived by his son Anantha Padmanabhan and a daughter Parvathi Devi. 

Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, born on 22 March 1922,  the head of the erstwhile royal family of Travancore and the Padmanabhaswamy temple, he was the younger brother to the last ruling monarch of the Kingdom of Travancore, Maharaja Chitra Thirunal Rama Varma. 

Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma took over the reins of his family after the demise of his elder brother Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the last ruling king in 1991.

Varma graduated in 1943 as a gold medalist in Economics, History and Sanskrit. He was married to Shrimati Radha Devi, daughter of Lieutnant Colonel Krishnan Gopinath Pandalai, who passed away in 1993. 

From 1991 till present, he held the title of His Highness Sri Padmanabha Dasa Vanchipala Marthanda Varma, Kulasehara Kiritapati Manney Sultan Maharaja Raja Ramaraja Bahadur, Shamsher Jang, Maharaja of Travancore. 

The ancestry of the royal family of Travancore can be traced to the Chera dynasty in South India. The first Maharaja of Travancore, Maharaja Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma gave away his kingdom to Padmanabha (or Vishnu) in 1750. Ever since then, the family has served the deity and heads the temple management. 

Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma was known for his simplicity and the daily visits that he used to make to the Padmanabhaswamy temple before his health conditions worsened. He used to visit the temple before 7.30 in the morning every day. 

He was known for his fondness towards camera and how he used to capture memories through them. He was also known for his modesty and leading a simple life.
