GOK #25: Onakka Chemmeen Chammanthi (Dried Shrimp Chutney)

GOK #25: Onakka Chemmeen Chammanthi (Dried Shrimp Chutney)
This is something which every Keralite just love. The sweetness of shrimp and the nutty flavor of coconut just go well together if that is  not enough tamarind and chilli takes it to the next level! Once you get the taste of it, you sure will go back for more.  Don't forget to try this!

Cleaned dried shrimp – ½ cup
Grated coconut – 1 cup
Crushed red chilli – 2 – 3 tsp
Tamarind - a small lime size
Shallots – 4, sliced
Ginger – ½ tsp, chopped
Curry leaves – 2 leaves
Coconut oil

Dry roast the cleaned dried shrimp for 7-8 mins on low flame. Keep it aside.

Heat oil in a pan and add crushed red chilli and sliced small onions (shallots).

Fry it for 2 mins. Add grated coconut and stir for a few mins. Do not brown it. This is done mainly to remove the water content from the coconut. Remove from fire and let it cool.

Combine the heated coconut, roasted dried shrimp, tamarind, ginger, salt and curry leaves. Grind everything together, till the dried shrimps are powdered well. Do not add water while grinding.

Serve with Kerala matta rice.
