Sushmita to open Ambika’s salon at Kochi

Sushmita to open Ambika’s salon at Kochi
Kochi: Former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen will be opening the first Kerala salon of accomplished hair and make up expert Ambika Pillai here on September 2.

Ambika, who has seven salons in Delhi NCR, told reporters here that she was coming back to her roots by opening a salon in Kerala, 25 years after entering the beauty business in New Delhi during the 1990s.

As part of the inauguration, ace designer Rohit Bal will be showcasing his latest collections at a fashion show here in which 26 of India's top most super models, including Joey Mathews, Nayanika Chatterjee, Bhawana Sharma and Carol Gracias are expected to participate. Sushmita would be Show Stopper, Ambika said.

Ambika said she was not here to 'completely change' the Kerala girls. “I like the way they look. But there is a need for some change,” she said.

Though as of now there were no plans to open more salons pan India, she was mulling taking the franchise route in Chennai, Ambika said adding she was also harbouring plans to open an academy in Kerala.

From the Kochi salon, which is at Vytilla, they were targetting a revenue of Rs two crore annually.

Nationally, Ambika said they were hoping a 20-25 per cent growth in revenues from the eight salons during 2013-14 fiscal.

Depending on the response in Kochi, she would think of opening salons at Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Kottayam, she said.

Well known names, including Sachin Tendulkar, Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and Sushmita Sen, Sonam Kapoor and Shobhana are among her clients.

She has also tried her hand at films such as 'Taal', where she did make up for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Though she has been offered several films, she prefers to work out of her salons, do shows and campaigns as films block bulk dates.

She is also synonymous with Fashion Week and solo shows overseas including New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Dubai, Mauritius and Switzerland.
